
Heavenly Paths Tour: Stonehenge or Woodhenge?
For countless centuries people have been observing the night sky driven by the desire to understand the universe and the secrets of life.
Recent excavations and findings in the German state Saxony-Anhalt have provided sensational evidence of this supremely human longing. The "Heavenly Paths", a new tourist route, will take you to four locations where you can explore the past in a unique way.
- The Sky Disc of Nebra. The original bronze disc with gold appliques can be admired at the State Museum of Prehistory which will reopen on May 23rd, 2008 in Halle.
- Ark of Nebra - the Sky Disc Experience. Explore the secrets and mysteries at the visitor centre "Ark of Nebra" in Wangen on the Mittelberg mountain where the disc was found.
- The Solar Observatory - Woodhenge! In Goseck visitors can marval at the oldest solar observatory in the world. It is close to the beautiful Goseck Castle located high above the idyllic Saale Valley. The Goseck Circle is an imposing monument with some 70 metres in diametre made of wood.
- The grave of the Dolmen Goddess. The burial chamber of Langeneichstädt represents a further aspect of the Heavenly Paths: here the "Dolmen Goddess", depicted on a 1.76 metre high menhir, attests to a belief in an afterlife by the people of the Stone Age. The grave and monlith date back to appox. 3,600-2,700 BC.
