The capital of the Berchtesgadener Land region, Berchtesgaden features many of the famous historic buildings of the area and also some of the most picturesque views. The town is dominated by the Watzmann mountain which provides a stunning backdrop to this ancient market town. Berchtesgaden is nestled in a National Park with over 200km of well-signed posted scenic walks. Before the concept of holidays was invented, Bavaria's kings and nobles came here to relax and hunt. The Jenner, reachable by cable car, the Hochschwarzeck, accessable by chair lift and the Eagle's Nest, Hitler's retreat, are just examples of locations from where you can experience the breathtaking view of the majestic snow-capped mountains around the land of Berchtesgaden. Lake Königssee, the King's lake is an awe-inspiring natural wonder and has to be experienced by boat. The area in and around Berchtesgaden also offers bike rental, golf, swimming, paragliding and spa treatments in the Watzmann Therme or in the nearby spa town of Bad Reichenhall. Salzburg, with its musical history, is also close by, and offers an ideal excursion for the ‘Sound of Music' tour, or for shopping. The local salt mine offers a tour that includes traveling by an underground train, a raft and downwards slide.
