Bavarian Alpine Lakes Hike

Self-guided walking tour

Nestling on the border between Salzburg, Tyrol and Bavaria are the Chiemgau Alps with soft mountains, large Alpine pastures and famous holiday places. Scenic views to the ragged summits of the Alps contrasted by green rolling pastures of the foothills of the Alps are part of the charm of this hiking tour from mystic Lake Königssee to the 'Bavarian Sea' Lake Chiemsee. The complete distance of 77km can easily be covered in 4 to 6 hrs per day while hiking on beautiful walking paths and forest roads. There are also some short and steep climbs and high level paths.

Travel dates: 10.05.2008 - 20.09.2008

Your itinerary

Day 1 - Lake Königssee:

Flight to Munich or Salzburg and rail transfer to Berchtesgaden.

Day 2 - Lake Königssee to Weißbach:

Take a comfortable walk past Lake Hintersee deep into the heart of the National Park Berchtesgaden. Enjoy scenic views of the ragged peaks of Reiter Alpe and Hochkalterer Mountain as you walk through Alpine pastures before your hike down through the Seisenbergklamm gorge into the Saalach river valley.

Day 3 - Weißbach to Lofer:

Walk along the Saalach river valley to the Lamprechtshöhle cave system, the longest water-coursed cave of Europe, and to the Vorderkaserklamm, a natural swimming pool. Continue your hike to St. Martin, where you can climb up to visit the pilgrim's church ‘Maria im Kirchental', nestling in an idyllic side valley in the steep walls of the Loferer Steinberge.

Day 4 - Loferer Alm via Winkelmoos Alm to Reit im

Winkl:

Catch a cable car up to the alpine pasture Loferer Alm, where the high level path to Steinplatte starts. Today you tackle the first summit walking through the lovely solitary mountain forests to the summit of Steinplatte. Hike down to Winkelmoos Alm and take the bus to Reit im Winkl.

Day 5 - Reit im Winkl:

Enjoy a day of rest in well-known resort Reit im Winkl. Or go on a classic mountain tour to the Fellhorn, a ridge free of forest only covered by a ‘field' of meadows and alpine-roses.

Day 6 - Reit im Winkl to 'The Eye of Chiemgau':

Enjoy the idyllic Alphine Lake Taubensee at 1,138 m on the mountain Rauhe Nadel. The day is quite long, with hiking paths leading from Alpine pasture to Alpine pasture.

Day 7 - 'Kampenwand Wall' to Lake Chiemsee:

Up you hike through mountain forest to the Alpine pastures of the Hochplatte and Kampenwand in the Chiemgau Alps to enjoy stunning views onto the lake. Follow the hiking path from alpine cabin to alpine cabin along the walls of Kampenwand. If you are sure-footed you can tackle the summit. Take the comfortable cable car downhill.

Day 8 - Lake Königssee:

Return to Lake Königsee for your homeward journey.
