Culture and History – The Splendour of Dresden and Beyond
Dresden, the ‘Florence on the Elbe', has been restored, with meticulous care, to the former glory that it boasted during the 18th Century under the rule of August the Strong - Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Dresden is internationally renowned for its art, history and culture.
Much of Dresden's architecture was built during the Baroque period, forming much of the historical city as it is known today. Dresden is home to many famous sights like the Semper Opera House with its many musical highlights throughout the year as well as the reconstructed Church of Our Lady with its imposing sandstone dome originally destroyed during World War II.
During the festive season, the oldest and most picturesque of Germany's Christmas Markets takes place in Dresden. The Stritzel Market dates back to 1434 and on the second Sunday of Advent each year the ceremonial cutting of the worlds largest Stollen takes place here.
