Leipzig Music and Culinary Heritage
Two hours south of Berlin is the university city of Leipzig, rich in music (Bach, Wagner, Mendelssohn, Bartholdy, Schumann), literature (while writing “Faust”, Goethe frequented the local Auerbach’s cellar, still going), art and business. There’s also a culinary heritage, whose most famous dish is Leipziger Allerlei – a mixture of carrots, kohlrabi, asparagus and cauliflower, served with morel mushrooms, prawns, oxtails and dumplings. Another oddity is Quarkkeulchen, a dessert resembling golden-brown potato fritters made with the soft cheese Quark and served with sugar or apple-sauce.
