Hamburg: Gourmet Capital of Northern Germany
Hamburg - A Vibrant Port
The official name for Hamburg, Germany’s second-largest city, and also the second-largest port city in the EU, is the “Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg”. Important industries include shipping, the aerospace company Airbus and media businesses - about half of Germany’s national newspapers and magazines are produced here. Designers Karl Lagerfeld and Jil Sander, and the current Chancellor, Angela Merkel, were born in Hamburg.
Must See's & Must Eat's
Enjoy Hamburg’s racy nightlife and fishy treats, such as Labskaus, a fish-and-meat hash, and bread rolls stuffed with prawns. Lübeck is the Baltic port where marzipan was invented. Smoked sprats, Sprotten, are a speciality from the naval base of Kiel, famous for sailing. Hanover Herring, and specifically rollmops, is the emblematic fish of northerly cities. Drink the black, bittersweet Mumme, named for its late 15th century brewer, Christian Mumme.
