East German Beer and "Posh Food"
Leipzig also has a strong brewing tradition. East German beers such as Radeberger or Wernesgrüner were big hits in the West long before the Wall came down - Brecht thought Radeberger the only decent beer in the GDR. The obvious place to try the local brews is Auerbach’s Keller, on Grimmaische Straße. If it’s posh food you want, however, head for Falco, “the most spectacular new restaurant in eastern Germany” (Gault Millau). It’s pricey – almost €100 for a five-course menu – but you get your money’s worth. Chef Peter Maria Schnurr’s speciality is “Nine Variations on Imperial Gold Caviar”. As you nibble it, you may ponder on the fact that Leipzig is where the revolution began that eventually brought down the old German Democratic Republic.
