When people think of Munich, beer is what first comes to mind, and particularly the Oktoberfest, known to locals as the Wies’n, which for two weeks every year, from the middle of September inexplicably, attracts 6m visitors drinking 5m litres of beer and consuming 400,000 pork sausages, mostly in beer tents erected by the big breweries (Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Lowenbrau, Paulaner, Spaten-Franziskaner and Hofbrauhaus, whose brauhauser at Am Platzl 9.
