Top Quality of Beer proven in Beer World Cup
The Beer World Cup in Seattle in 2006 was as feverish a challenge to national pride as anything on the pitch could be. More than 2,000 beers were appraised, and I, as one of the judges, thought Germany, with 28 medals, did well, but its brewers thought they should have won every gold. Many Germans believe theirs are the world’s only real beers. They quote the Reinheitsgebot, the Purity Law which insists that beer be made only from malted barley, water and hops. Yeast had not been identified at the time of legislation in 1516.The rich soil and cool climate that favours the cultivation of top-quality barley - and sometimes wheat - defines the original beer-brewing regions of Europe, whose biggest producer of barley for brewing is Germany. German brewing families who emigrated to the Americas during Europe’s Industrial Revolution used local grains like maize and rice, and made lighter, blander, beers for a multi-ethnic society. In today’s global village, these “modern” beers are also demanded by German youth. But many classics remain. Germany has about 1,200 breweries, producing up to 20 beers.
