Munich Beer Festival: Oktoberfest 2008
Often imitated, but never bettered! There really is no better setting than Bavaria's colourful capital for the fun and frolics of the world's greatest beer festival to take place.
The Oktoberfest attracts visitors from all over the globe, all looking to enjoy the world's number one beer festival, which takes place in vast marquees hosted by various Munich breweries - each one holding several thousand people.
The Oktoberfest's opening parade takes place on Saturday 20th September when the breweries, with their horse-drawn carriages and various traditional folk groups, parade through the streets of Munich. Once the procession finishes at the ‘Theresienwiese', the Oktoberfest is underway and Munich buzzes with fun and excitement until the last stein (a 1-litre beer mug) is drunk two weeks later!
With its lively carnival atmosphere and colourful fairground, the Oktoberfest is a great family occasion and it is common to see families of all ages gathering together to enjoy the unique ambience this legendary annual event. The festival's giant funfair surrounds the beer tents and combines all the traditional attractions, such as big dippers, merry-go-rounds and Ferris wheels, with the very latest white knuckle rides.
