Kelheim World Cup Medals
The world’s oldest monastery brewery since at least 1050, is Kloster Weltenburg, near Kelheim, north of Munich on the Danube. Kelheim’s Barock Dunkel (“dark”) beer is light-bodied and smooth, with a cookie-like, malt character and toasty finish. Weltenburg Barock Dunkel won a medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup.
Wheat beers are very popular in the South. As in the North, the term “white” is used (Weisse or Weissbier) or sometimes Weizen (meaning “wheat”). Most southern wheat beers are distinctively fruity, often recalling bananas, and sometimes cloves, characteristics that derive from the yeast used and its interplay with the wheat. No fruits or spices are added. They pour with a huge head and lively carbonation, and are typically served in a vase-shaped glass, occasionally with a late breakfast of Weisswurst (veal sausages). The unfiltered version, Mit Hefe (“with yeast”), is by far the most popular. There are also dark (Dunkelweizen) and strong (Weizenbock) versions. Schneider’s Dunkelweizenbock, Aventinus, is another classic World Cup medallist.
