Passion Plays
A Passion Play is a dramatic presentation of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and originates in the rituals of the Catholic Church. Passion Plays first appeared in Latin, then in German and developed into popular religious plays by the fifteenth century.
The chief survivor of former times is the Oberammergau Passion Play, which first took place in 1634 in the Bavarian village of Oberammergau. In 2010 the Passion Play will be brought to life by 2000 actors for the 41st time. It will be carried out four times a week between mid-May and the beginning of October.
