The attractive spa town of Bad Tölz has a steep main street lined with frescoed houses, cafes, bars and shops. It’s a good place to use as a base for rafting down the Isar River. Visit in November when the locals, dressed in traditional dirndls and lederhosen, celebrate the patron saint of horses with a pilgrimage up to the Leonhardi chapel, accompanied by brass bands and flower-decked horse-drawn carts.
