Bach spent the last 27 year of his life in Leipzig, and Mendelssohn lived here for 12 years. Wagner and Goethe also lived here. Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau where there is a museum devoted to his life and career and that of his wife Clara, also a leading pianist and composer. The first true European porcelain was invented in Meißen, by the alchemist Johann Böttger who was actually attempting to make gold.
