Lüneburg

Lüneburg is located on the edge of the Lüneburger Heide region south of Hamburg. Splendid gables show the former fortune of the city at times of the Hanseatic League. Especially impressive are the city centre "Am Sande" and the St. Johannes Church with its 108-metre brick tower.

It is the oldest of the three maintained medieval churches of Lüneburg. Especially worth seeing is the city hall, one of the biggest maintained medieval city halls of Germany. As a city with a young university Lüneburg has approx. 72.000 inhabitants. Shopping and a cultural excursion are easily combined in Lüneburg.

Everywhere in historical vaults, medieval breweries or the old port, restaurants, beer gardens and street cafés invite you to stay. Salt, "white gold", made Lüneburg into a rich and powerful city in the middle ages. Find out how it was found and extracted on the "Salted Day" and how important it is to Lüneburg even today.

Highlights:

  • Guided tours in historical costumes
  • Old craftmen's market and traditional festivals
  • Salt makers in the salt museum
  • Visit North Germany's only brewery museum
  • Water tower: panoramic view over Lüneburg
  • Boat lift in Scharnebeck
  • Bike tours
  • Historical Christmas market
