Check out the Schiffshebewerk on the Havel-Oder Canal. Opened in 1934, it is a massive barge-lift used to transport barges between the Oder Valley and the upland section of the canal. When it opened it replaced a series of locks and was the biggest structure of its kind in the world at 94 m long, 27 m wide and 60 m high. It cut the time to get vessels through the locks from several hours to 15 minutes.
