Berlin: Reunited in 1990

Facts

Population 3.39 million. Area 889 sq. km. A city state surrounded by the State of Brandenburg.

Famous Facts

Germany’s capital since Unification in 1990. The city was divided in half following its partitioning amongst the victors of World War II and for 40 years developed as two entirely separate cities. The Berlin Wall was built to enforce the division of the city between 1961 and 1989. 191 people died trying to cross it. Once divided, the reunited city now boasts a double dose of culture – two National Galleries, two Egyptian Museums, two city centres.... A third of the city-state comprises parks, forests, lakes and rivers. ... >> more
