Famous Facts

  • Munich (München) is home to the world-famous Oktoberfest where about 6.1 million litres of beer are consumed annually.
  • Every 10 years Oberammergau holds its epic Passion Play. It was first held in 1634 to give thanks that the town was spared from the plague.
  • The Ries Valley was created by a meteorite impact about 15 million years ago. The Apollo 7 Astronauts studied the area in preparation for their moon landing.
  • The diesel engine was invented in Augsburg, Bavaria’s oldest city.
  • The state is home of the Lederhosen, the sausage dog, Sauerkraut and Wurst.
  • Bavaria was the only German state that refused to ratify the Basic Law (constitution) after World War II. Instead it opted to return to its pre-war status as a free state and drafted its own constitution.
