  • The youngest German State, established in 1952 by the merging of three smaller provinces.
  • Population 10.6 million. Area 35,751 sq. km.
  • Germany’s most prosperous state.
  • The car was invented here and established the state’s place at the forefront of world technology.

 

Famous Facts

  • State capital Stuttgart was the birthplace of two gadgets which shaped the world we now live in.
  • Gottlieb Daimler invented the petrol-powered high speed engine and Robert Bosch invented the spark plug.
  • In 1926 the Mercedes-Benz factory began car production here and Ferdinand Porsche followed suit after World War II.
  • Zeppelin built and tested his airships on the banks of the Lake Constance (Bodensee).
  • Stuttgart is also home to Germany’s second largest beer festival – the Cannstatter Wasen, started in 1818.

 

Where about

In the south-west of Germany, bordered by the German states of Bavaria to the east, Hesse to the north and Rhineland-Palatinate & Saarland to the west. It shares international borders to the west with France and Switzerland to the south.
