Mecklenburg Lake District
The Mecklenburg Lake District (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte) was carved out by the retreating glaciers of the last Ice Age, leaving behind an area of around 1,000 lakes connected by canals and rivers, in a landscape of marsh and moorland. The Müritzsee, Germany’s second largest lake lies here, 117 sq. km of water providing a haven for waterbirds including the osprey, white-tailed eagle and cranes. It’s also known for its huge variety of plants, wild flowers, insects and butterflies.
Explore the Mecklenburg Lake District by taking a cruise aboard a pleasure boat, or by renting a canoe or raft. There’s a well-marked cycle route – the Müritz-Rundweg – with plenty of places to stay along the 82 km trail.
