The 65 km of Rhine which carves its way through the mountains between Koblenz and Bingen, has some of the most dramatic and romantic scenery in Europe. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. Baedeker started publishing his famous series of guide books in Koblenz in 1823. This is one of Germany's biggest wine producing regions. The Riesling grape is grown here, on man-made terraced slopes that go back to medieval times.
