Regions in Rhineland-Palatinate
The Rhineland-Palatinate is an especially charming holiday region, with its mix of idyllic river scenery and unspoilt mountainous regions, picturesque old towns and villages, famous wine-growing areas and romantic castles. It is quickly and easily accessible by road, rail and air.
Facts
- The Rhineland-Palatinate produces about 70% of Germany's wine and is more closely connected with the grape than any other German state. Every year there are over a thousand local festivals celebrating the wine and grape harvest, an excellent opportunity for visitors to taste the wines and sparkling wines from the Rhineland-Palatinate.
- Rhineland-Palatinate has fortresses, stately homes, castles and castle ruins too numerous to mention. Medieval tournaments and castle fairs recreate the atmosphere of bygone days. Music and drama are performed in opulent baroque surroundings and magnificent courtly settings.
There are more than 30 castles and palaces along the romantic Rhine Valley alone. Some of these castles are in secluded valleys - for example, the picture-book Eltz Castle on the Moselle. Others have great historical significance, like Hambach Castle, which played a vital role in the development of the German democratic movement.
There are castles and palaces in some of the most idyllic spots - enchanted Sleeping Beauty castles or mighty fortifications and former robber barons' dens.
