Bach's Birthplace
In the historical little town of Eisenach at the foot of Wartburg Castle, Johann Sebastian Bach was born in 1685.
In 1907, the world's first museum dedicated to the great composer was opened in a 600 year old town-house. Here visitors can learn everything about Bach's life and work and view the maestro's original manuscripts, his household goods and valuable instruments from his time.
A very special part of the tour is a concert with Baroque instruments. Several generations of the Bach family lived in Arnstadt, the oldest town in Thuringia, and it was here that Johann Sebastian took up his first post as organist, in what is today called the Bach Church.
However, the actual ancestral seat of the Bach family was in Wechmar, near Gotha. The Bach House, the oldest place in the world where members of the Bach family lived and worked, today is home to a memorial of the family.
