Saarbrücken (pop 200,000) is the capital of this small state. Known as an industrial centre, it’s also a city that combines its two heritages – French and German – in its language and cuisine. It has modernized itself extensively while maintaining its regal past through its lovely red-brick palaces, its many churches, and its old guesthouses and manors.
