Mainz

Mainz (pop 184,000) is the state capital, situated at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Main.

Gutenberg, inventor of the first printing press and creator of the Gutenberg Bible, was born in the state capital Mainz.

Visit the Mainzer Dom – the city’s stunning cathedral which gleams red in the sunshine. It is one of only three Romanesque imperial cathedrals that has come almost unscathed through time to this day.

Don’t miss the stunning stained glass windows in St-Stephan-Kirche in Mainz. Created by Marc Chagall, the nine windows, glowing vivid blue, represent “Reconciliation” – between France and Germany, Christian and Jew.
