Magdeburg
Magdeburg (pop 228,000) is the state capital. Although about 90% of the city was destroyed in World War II the centre has been rebuilt, with wide boulevards and many of its historic buildings renovated or restored.
Vacuum technology was invented in Magdeburg in the 1650s.
