Dortmund (pop 587,000) is one of Germany’s biggest beer producers, producing over 500 million litres (132 million gallons) every year. The city was granted brewing rights in 1293.

Dortmund is famous for coal mining, beer and the many green areas of the city. The Romberg Park Botanical Gardens has a large unique collection of foreign trees and shrubs. The Zoo is also worth a visit.
