Romantic Worms
Roman Cathedral and Wine Festivals.
Worms on the Rhine is one of most historical cities in Germany. After the Celts, the Romans, the Burgundies and the Franks resided here, the town experienced numerous imperial and aristocratic days. One of its most exquisite inheritances is the late-Roman cathedral of St Peter, whose crypt contains the mortal remains of many crowned heads. Inside, the baroque high altar by Balthasar Neumann is most impressive.
In the shadow of the cathedral the young Augustinian monk, Martin Luther, defended his thesis. "Here I stand and can no other." He is said to have proclaimed these words in the presence of Emperor Karl and in doing so, thus began a new epoch in the history of the world.
Wine is also part of the city's history and the best can be enjoyed at the so-called "Backfischfest", the greatest and most popular wine festival on the Rhine. There are over 400 local wines just waiting to be tasted.
