Romantic Mainz
Mainz - City located on the River Rhine.
Vitality, a widespread historical culture and a friendly way of life – this is the city of Mainz! The Romans founded the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate 2000 years ago. They named it “Moguntiacum” and the city became a strategically important base in the Roman Empire. Significant archaeological excavations and historical collections still represent the city’s ancient roots.
Lively City Centre and Historical Sights.
The heart of Mainz is the marketplace which is dominated by the 1000 years old cathedral, dedicated to St. Martin. It is the meeting point for the people of Mainz, not only when it is market-day, but also for celebrations and promenades. A few metres away is the Gutenberg-Museum. It was built to honour Johannes Gutenberg, the most famous son of the city, who invented book printing with movable type faces around 1450. The museum shows two copies of his world-famous bibles which display the history of printing in all its detail. Another visitor highlight of the city is St. Stephen’s Church with its blue glowing stained glass windows created by the artist Marc Chagall. Apart from that, don’t miss the historic quarter of Mainz! There is no better place to see the life of Mainz than in the narrow streets, on the squares and in the numerous wine bars.
