Pforzheim

Pforzheim is the undisputed centre of the jewellery and watch-and-clock-making industry in Germany and the gateway to the northern Black Forrest with all its attractions. A unique experience is the museum of jewellery in Reuchlinhaus.

There are many museums where visitors can experience the "Gold City" for themselves at first hand: the Jewellery Museum in the Reuchlinhaus, for example, has a unique collection charting the history of western jewellery over five thousand years. The history of jewellery and clocks is demonstrated on original, working machines in Pforzheim's "living museum", the Technical Museum of the Pforzheim Jewellery & Clock Industry.

The exhibition centre run by Deutsche Schmuck- & Uhren Marketing GmbH, the world's largest permanent exhibition of jewellery, clocks and accessories, displays the creativity and uniqueness of modern jewellery and clock design. There is a fascinating exhibition of precious stones at Schütt, a company which has been making jewellery and cutting precious stones since 1890: it features precious stones and jewels from all over the world in various stages of production - uncut, polished and being machined for use in jewellery.

There is also the Minerals Museum in Dillweissenstein which boasts collectors' pieces from all around the world. Visitors looking for local history should go the Castle and Foundation Cathedral of St. Michael, which is a monument that charts the history of the city and contains some prized tombs, including that of Grand Duchess Stephanie, the adoptive daughter of Napoleon.

You could also visit the Kappelhof, the Chapel Court, a site of archaeological interest with excavations from the different periods of the city's history, from Roman times, through the Middle Ages, up to the destruction of the city in 1945. The City Museum maps the development of the settlement of Pforzheim through to its destruction on 23rd February 1945, and last but not least, visitors to the Pforzheim Gallery can learn the history and individual stories of artists who are or were important to Pforzheim and the surrounding region.
