Trier is Germany's Oldest City
The Romans founded Trier ‘Augusta Treverorum', in 16 B.C. By the end of the 3rd century it was an Imperial Residence and capital of the West-Roman Empire. Six emperors held court here and Trier had a population of 80,000 as early as the 4th century.
In the 12th century, the Archbishops made Trier the capital of their electorate, which experienced periods of great prosperity and despairing decline up until its dissolution at the end of the 18th century.
Today the city's glorious history is still to be witnessed at every step on a stroll through the bustling Old Quarter.
