Osnabrück - City of Peace
Known as the "City of Peace", Osnabrück became famous for its City Hall of The Treaty of Westphalia. It was in 1648 when emissary, representatives of the European powers, put an end to the Thirty Years War after five years of negotiations in Osnabrück and Münster. "Committed to peace" - is the maxim in political and cultural life. This Gothic City Hall (built 1487-1512) is decorated with statues and portraits of various monarchs. Especially worth seeing is the historic Hall of Peace.
It was the Emperor Charlemagne, who erected a mission on the banks of the River Hase in 780. On a crossing of two trade routes from Holland to the Elbe River and from North to South, from Bremen to Cologne it grew to a prosperous hanseatic town (1412-1669).
