The Old Town
One of Osnabrück's definite must sees is its charming historic Old Town with the magnificent St Peter Cathedral (since 13th century) which houses the Cathedral Treasury and the Diocesan Museum with an art collection from the 11th to the 18th century.
The Erich Maria Remarque Peace Centre presents the permanent exhibition about the author of the 1929 bestseller "All Quiet on the Western Front". The museum "Felix-Nussbaum-Haus" owns the world's largest collection of the Jewish artist Felix Nussbaum born in Osnabrück. The museum was designed by the American star architect Daniel Libeskind.
The idyllic Heger-Tor area is a warren of lanes and alleyways, taking visitors past half-timbered houses with richly decorated facades. Quaint lanes lead past brightly coloured town houses on the Market Square, past the Town Hall where the Peace Treaty of Westphalia was signed and on to the unique Steinwerke (Stone Works). One could imagine that the Middle Ages are waiting around the next corner...
It' s time to accompany the night watchman as he does his rounds by lantern light.
