Heilbronn
Heilbronn is a busy town with a superb setting all fringed by vineyards and therefore even at first glance it lives up to its reputation as the largest German wine-growing community. The symbolic figure of the town is ‘Käthchen von Heilbronn’ who served Kleist as a model for his drama of the same title.
Heilbronn's town hall, with its ornate astronomical clock, is an example of Gothic architecture dating back to 1417. It was extended in the Renaissance style at the end of the 16th century. The ornate astronomical clock by Isaak Habrecht, which dates from 1579/80, is worth a closer look. It features an astronomical phase, a lunar phase and a timepiece with moving figures.
St. Kilian's Church is another of the town's interesting sights. The Renaissance Tower on this impressive structure is particularly noteworthy. The master builder, Hans Schweiner, used the figures to symbolize the religious grievances. The high altar, built by Hans Seyfer in 1498, deserves a special mention.
The Käthchen House, which was built in 1534, takes its name from Heinrich Kleist's play "Käthchen of Heilbronn". The Municipal Museums and the Museum of Sculpture are currently housed in the Deutschhof. Another testament to Heilbronn's history is the Bulwark Tower (Bollwerksturm), which is named after its most celebrated prisoner, Götz von Berlichingen.
