Take in the breathtaking scale of Cologne’s Cathedral (Kölner Dom) with its 43 m (142 ft) high vaulted ceiling, and its 144 m (472 ft) length. Its 157 m (515 ft) spires were originally the tallest structure in the world until the building of the Eiffel Tower. It’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Check out the magnificent art treasures inside, too.
Check out the view from the 95 m high viewing platform at the base of the steeple of the Kölner Dom. The 509 steps to the top will work up an appetite. Stop on the way up to see the Peter Bell, at 24-tonnes is the largest working bell in the world.
The main attraction inside the Dom is The Shrine of the Three Magi, a magnificent jewelled reliquary housing the remains of the Three Wise Men.
Visit Cologne during Lent when it’s carnival time – the city throws one of the world’s greatest parties!
The Golden Chamber (Goldene Kammer) in the church of St Ursula is an ornate baroque chamber lined with geometrically arranged human bones, built to house the remains of the martyred St Ursula and her companions.
