The Wartburg in Eisenach
The mighty fortress towering above the town is the legendary castle which was probably founded by Ludwig the Jumper, in the late 11th century.
Reputedly, it was the setting for the singing contest immortalized by Wagner in this opera Tannhäuser. Between 1211 and 1228 the castle was the home of Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia and from May 1521 until March 1522 Martin Luther found refuge here while he translated the New Testament into German. Major reconstructions in the 19th century gave the castle its old-time romantic character.
Pay a visit to Wartburg, a superb medieval castle perched up on a hill above the town of Eisenach (Bach's birthplace). It's the only German castle to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
