Baroque Architecture In Würzburg
"Residenz," a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site
Built by one of Europe's greatest baroque-age architects, Balthasar Neumann, the "Residenz" is the former home of Würzburg's dukes, who were also the town's bishops.
Nicknamed the "castle above all castles," the "Residenz" is said to have the most beautiful staircase of any building in the world.
It was decorated in 1752-53 by the Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo with the largest-ever ceiling fresco which depicts the four continents of the earth known at the time: Europe, Asia, Africa and America.
