In 1386 Count Ruprecht I founded Heidelberg University, Germany's oldest institution. Heidelberg attracted literary greats including Arnim, Brentano, Hölderlin, Eichendorff and Goethe. No city was so beloved by the Romantic poets as Heidelberg.
