Potsdam's Role After World War II
During the night of 14th April 1945, a British air raid destroyed large parts of the inner city of Potsdam. Battles against Soviet military units during the last days of April 1945 caused more heavy damage. Luckily, the parks and their palaces remained almost untouched.
From the end of July until the beginning of August 1945, after the war had ended, the Potsdam Agreement was negotiated and signed between Churchill, Truman and Stalin in Cecilienhof Palace.
In 1990, Potsdam became the capital of the newly founded State of Brandenburg. You can explore both Potsdam and Berlin with the same Welcome Card.
