The Old Quarter of Heidelberg can be covered on foot in about 2 hours. An equal amount of time should be allowed for the Heidelberg Castle with its immense wine cask (49,000 gallons), Apothecaries' Museum and castle grounds.

The Castle is easily reached by cable car. Another must is the Studentenkarzer (student prison) where unruly students were incarcerated.

The University Library has a famous collection of handwritten medieval manuscripts including such treasures as the Manesse Manuscript, a repository of Middle High German poetry.
