The Clemenswerth Castle in Lower Saxony
The hunting grounds in Emsland are particularly blessed with wild animals. That was the reason for the creation of one of the greatest architectural treasures of the late European Baroque: Clemenswerth castle. The unique edifice with a magnificent core building and eight guest pavilions, arranged in a star shape around the centre, is a masterpiece.
Art historians like to compare it to the royal Baroque castles of France. After a guided tour it is easy to imagine what must have been going on at the hunting parties 250 years ago. From 1737-1747, the elector Clemens August commissioned his architect Johann Conrad Schlaun from Münster to erect this hunting castle on the "Hümmling".
The individual pavilions around the actual castle commemorate the elector, his dioceses Köln, Münster, Paderborn, Hildesheim, Osnabrück and the seat of the Deutschorden (the German order) Mergentheim.
