The Celle Castle
Celle Castle is the oldest building of the city of Celle and situated directly in the town centre, close to Celle's many romantic half-timbered houses in the old town. The building was first mentioned as the "castrum" in 1318 and its oldest parts date from the second half of the 13th century.
Celle Castle was originally constructed in a Renaissance architectural style. Around 1700, it was completely renovated by Duke Wilhelm. The theatre was also added at this time. It is now the oldest theatre in Europe in which performances are regularly given with its own resident theatre troupe.
Celle Castle also houses a chapel and the only place of worship north of the alps with completely preserved renaissance fittings. The visitor should not miss the state rooms, the castle's kitchens or the state history section in the Bomann museum with its interesting depiction of the history of the Kingdom of Hanover.
