The Art of Gardening - Ettenbühl Gardens
In the foothills of the southern Black forest in the Marktgräflerland region lies the beautiful setting of Ettenbühl Gardens. Over the last thirty years four hectares of simple farmland were shaped into a beautiful English style garden to what has become a paradise for nature lovers. Originally only used as a private garden, the place was transformed for public use in 1998.
The garden, set next to Landhaus Ettenbühl, is remarkable for its extensive collection of rare and beautiful plants and its superb collection of roses. The planting is ever changing throughout the year and covers many interesting woods and different themed gardens: the lavender garden with shrubs and roses, the pond garden with pergolas and the sunken garden with its extensive collection of peonies. Not to be missed is the rose garden with more than 400 historical and traditional roses.
Due to its extensive range of plants the gardens have to be well looked after by a team of landscapers under supervision of garden designer John Scarman who always striving for a high standard, combines English Gardening practices with the challenges offered by the harsher Continental climate. From February to November John Scarman passes on his knowledge in various informative and practical garden courses which are held in English language. Guided Tours of the different gardens are also available.
If you want to relax before or after your visit to the gardens the Restaurant-Teagarten is the ideal place, offering breakfast and snacks as well as English Afternoon Tea throughout the year. The Landhaus Ettenbühl can be booked for various events with the gardens offering a beautiful backdrop for weddings, birthdays or other functions.
