When Germans Become Fools!

Those interested in learning more about the fascinating Fasnacht traditions and customs should visit the "Narrenschopf" Fasnacht Museum in Bad Dürrheim. There, they'll find a large and colourful collection of historical costumes and masks from the region.

The Alemannic Fasnacht is one of the oldest and most traditional pre-Lent carnival events. Held every year shortly before Ash Wednesday, it is still celebrated - with absolutely authenticity - in the Black Forest and in the city of Constance on the lake that bears its name.

Although there are local variations on the theme, traditional handmade garments and uniquely painted and hand-carved wooden masks are always the most distinctive aspect of the festivities.

During what's known as the "Fifth Season", groups of 'fools' go rollicking through the streets of Fasnacht strongholds until late into night. In Rottweil the parade kicks off with the so-called 'Fools Jump' (Narrensprung) through the city gate.

Those feeling especially "foolish" can join in the "Bachnab" in Schramberg, which involves floating down the River Schiltach in small in wooden barrels. (19th February 2007)

Gengenbach is famous for the "Klepperleswettbewerb" (a kind of Castanet playing) that takes place this year on Saturday 17th February 2007, where the towns boys take part in a contest to see who can play their wooden instruments the best.

In Elzach tradition calls for historically dressed witches and devils to frighten visitors and locals alike in the streets and lanes, and even in the restaurants. And the Black Forest towns of Villingen-Schwenningen and Breisach are also famous for their versions of Alemannic Fasnacht.
