Black Forest Open Air Museum (Gutach)

In the chimneyless kitchen, where sausages and ham hang from the ceiling, you can still smell the smoke from the last kitchen fire.

In the stalls stand traditional breeds of domestic animals while sheep, goats and chickens romp outside in the meadows.
In the Vogtsbauernhof Black Forest Open Air Museum the tradition of the rural Black Forest awakes. Discover the world of the Black Forest farmers, how they lived and worked, in the impressive 16th - 19th century Black Forest farmhouses, in the mill and the sawmill, on guided tours and activity days.

Only the Vogtsbauernhof farm building, the bakery and distillery were originally built here on museum land. The other farmhouses and their outbuildings came to Gutach from other areas of the Black Forest. Today you will find this unique collection, which shows the architecture and farming methods of the whole of the Black Forest region.

Handmade farm equipment, hand-carts and hay sledges bear witness to the arduousness of day-to-day work on these farms. The miscellaneous tools on display tell of the age-old tradition of craftsmanship and the skill of the Black Forest carpenters, coach builders and wood carvers. Some of these old tools can still be seen in use today during "Craftsmen's Activity Days".

Witness the changing of the seasons in the gloriously colourful farm gardens, in the show fields where traditional types of crops and plants can be seen growing, and in the herb garden where more than 130 medicinal herbs are planted.
These are just some of the reasons why the Black Forest Open Air Museum, with its 280,000 visitors a year, is one of the most popular open-air museums in Germany.
